Smashed Potatoes Games Design Document

Smashed Potatoes is my final major project for this year.

I am working on the game with one other person in my course

It is going to be a tower defence game where potatoes are going to be attacking all kinds of fantasy creatures.

I will be recording all developments and changes on my game below.

Partners blog: http://lapisdragon-studio.weebly.com/

Due to a disagreement of ideas me and my partner have decided to do our own projects.

Revision Notes TO DO OVERVIEW (OVERVIEW - Talk GAMEPLAY)

'Smashed potatoes' is a “Plants vs Zombies” style tower defence game where the goal is to defend your point (location to be decided) from an army of potato soldiers using a selection of fantasy creatures such as unicorns and leprechauns. BACKSTORY- Told by Larry the Leprechaun.

"Top of the morning to ya laddies, I've been tasked by the general to give you the rundown on the situation. So where to start... Elise the elf was insane. She loved to do experiments. Her latest was on potatoes, to see if life could be given to the inanimate objects. Unfortunately, it worked a little too well, they became sentient. Elise was so happy with her success that she ran to tell everyone. The potatoes, however, were not happy when they saw what happened to other potatoes, how they were used to feed the fantasy creatures. From there they declared war against all the fantasy world. All that stood between the potatoes and the fantasy kingdom was the Leprechauns and anyone else that felt up to the task... that means you mate."

Stories are used in games for many reasons. Some of these are listed below

Interaction

When interaction with certain assets in games can lead to learning about character stories to inform the player about that character and give hints to hidden items, missions and Easter eggs in the game.

Background

Stories can be used in games to give a brief or detailed outline on what the main context of the game is as well as a brief overview on some of the main characters (enemies and allies) and possibly be used to show some of the key features in the game.

Some games such as Dying Light use the loading screens to give the player an overview of the current mission they are on as well as let them know what the characters feelings on the matter are.

Character Development

Storytelling can be used for character development in many different ways and can influence how a player sees a character.

Character development can be done through something changing in that characters life that damages his or her emotions, for example, a close friend or family member (almost)dying can have a negative effect on a character.

The best example of a character change due to storytelling is Kenny from "The Walking Dead Game" as he went through a lot of changes as his story took place.

Kenny good [Image 2]
Kenny bad [Image 3]

At the start of Kenny's story, we saw him as a loyal loving family man who would only fight to protect his family and friends. after losing his son, Duck, and wife, Katjaa, he snapped and became cold and sad all the time until you get split up from him. After a while you, as Clementine, find him again and he is a completely different person, he was kind and protective of Clementine and his new partner, Sarita, and everything is okay until they run into a man named Carver who cost Kenny his eye bin a fight and he snapped again ending in him killing carver (in a less than child-friendly way) then after walking through a horde of walkers, zombies, he lost Sarita to a zombie and changed for a final time but this time into a mix of the mental Kenny that was not good for anyone and the caring loving Kenny that would do anything to protect Clementine and baby Alvin jr. and always tried to avoid risky situations.

Genre

Different game genres would do storytelling in diffferent ways such as a horror game may have darker grainier cutsceens with most of the story told through monotone dialogue and still pictures. Whereas, a game like a tower devence or other simple games would be more colourful and possible have no real dialogue just some repetitive soundeffects in time with words on screen telling the story to have describe what the main concepts of the game, the backstory and any controls that the player needs to know in order to play, this would normally would happen prior to the player actually starting yo play.
