1.1 Introduction

Working to a brief is a very important part in most projects. They are one of the first parts of all projects to provide a background on what needs to be done. brief are also done during and at the end of a project. It is done during a project to keep the team up to date and dish out new tasks to be done. At the end of a project a brief is held to ‘debrief’ the team on all that has been accomplished.

1.2 Different types of briefs

There are many types of briefs but we will be focusing on a few:

  • Contractual

This is a type of brief where a team of people get hired by a client in order to complete a project to the brief which is given guidelines to which the team must follow. If the guidelines are not met legal actions may be taken.

[Fig 1]

  • Negotiated

A negotiated brief is a brief that two or more groups have come together with different ideas and compromise to create a plan of what can be done.

  • Formal

A formal brief is when a client give a company details of a task they want doing where the main details of the brief have been discussed and agreed beforehand and all work that is wanting to be done is what has been discussed.

  • Informal

This type of brief is generally a mere conversation between just two or more people or small groups where there is a discussion but no official details are written out, it is just a verbal agreement.

  • Commission

A commissioned brief is when a small independent media company is hired to do a project by a larger media company.

  • Tender

Tender briefs is when a production company creates a proposal to appeal to a brief which a client has published.

  • Cooperative

When two production companies get hired by a client to work together on a project it is called a cooperative brief.

  • Competition

A competition brief is when a bunch of production companies work on the same project and submit them with hope of having their work chosen to win.

1.3 Advantages of Different types briefs

  • Contractual

There is a contract so the production company knows exactly what needs to be done and there's an exact deadline where if they complete the task they get paid the agreed amount.

Image 1

  • Negotiated

Because all the details are decided between all parties there is less chance of conflict and prices can be more affordable.

  • Formal

This type of brief is one of the easiest to understand because it explains ALL details in full so the production company has all the information needed. Unfortunately because all the details are agreed during the brief it is more difficult to change things.

  • Informal

Because it is a verbal agreement it is all done quickly and the details can be changed easily when needed, this could also be argued as a downside because it can cause disagreements.

  • Commission

This type of brief is especially useful as a company can do multiple tasks at the same time bc they can instruct two groups to do two tasks simultaneously meaning the overall project will be completed faster.

  • Tender

With this brief its really good for the receiving end as it gets to choose which option they believe is best.

  • Cooperative

The upside to this is that all parties can combine and challenge each others ideas in order to better the subject at hand.

  • Competition

The advantage of this brief is that a single person is chosen from each party who is most capible of carrying the task.

1.4 Summary

To summarise all listed types of briefs are really useful in it own way and will be used in circumstances where it will be most relevant to do so.

Part 3

We were tasked to model the Fuchs Decontamination vehicle in small teams. We worked well as a team and had really good communication. we held short team meeting daily to see where everyone was a delegate jobs to those who had completed their previous task.

We also did really well at helping one another by showing people how to do certain tasks that they did not know or how to do and knowing we could ask those with more experience to help those with less no matter how simple the task may be. In the end, we had worked together and made a model that looked amazing and we had bonded well as friends and taught each other more than we thought we could.

Below are some recordings from the meetings held by me and my team.

As you can see we made our meetings brief but made sure to cover the information we needed to and had a record of things such as the date, so we know which meetings are recent and which is outdated, who was present, so we know what will be put on hold and who needs filling in with what information, and of course we kept a record of who was doing which task so we could delegate new task where necessary

I had some major developments as a 3D modeller during the time of this project because I had a very small amount of experience in 3D modelling and was faced with that barrier as such, however I was able to overcome that barrier by trusting the support my team gave and allowed them to teach me a great deal about how to use the software and features to available in them.

After the project, I am feeling more positive about my abilities in the creative games development industry as a modeller and would definitely consider becoming a freelance modeller in the future alongside games development.

I was unable to find any primary research for this assignment, i looked for books and websites but could not find anything on topic apart from online blogs so after looking for a while longer i settled on a online blog to use as research and have linked the blog below.
